Rose of the Month #6
By Gaird Hamilton

INGRID BERGMAN

For our sixth Rose of the Month we thought back over the real performers in the yard, thinking especially of a rose to fill lots of vases with beautiful large flowers, an abundant prolific performer. The rose that does all that and more is “Ingrid Bergman”,one of the ten roses in the World Rose Hall of Fame. This rose has large 5" flowers which are clear bright red with 35-40 petals, borne singly, with a slight spice fragrance. The foliage is medium dark semi-glossy with upright vigorous growth which is compact and forms a very nice shaped bush. The stems are always long enough for excellent bouquets, they are thick and strong, and our bush has been known to have as many as 50 on it at one time. The blooms have a very nice form with an occasional one having exhibition quality for rose shows, but most much better in the vase or in the garden. The petals have a lot of substance and hold up quite well during the wet periods which the coast is prone to.

Even with all of the new color combinations now available in hybrid teas, really nice big red roses make a bold statement in the garden and it is a rare visitor who passes this bush without stopping to look, when it is in the glory of it’s full bloom. It also has a pretty fast repeat and is very healthy. All in all, it is a rose which I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
